North Andover girl takes risk and it pays off
Coming out of North Andover High in 1991, Tracy Noonan turned her back on the Ivy Leagues to walk on at North Carolina and try to beat out scholarship soccer players. She did just that and is starting in the Final 4 this weekend.

Limited Chances
Noonan's work as UNC's goalkeeper is judged by quality - not quantity

CHAPEL HILL-On the surface, playing in goal for the women's soccer team at North Carolina appears to be just slightly more exciting than sitting on the bench. Tar Heel goalkeeper traditionally has been the loneliest job in college soccer.

"Tracy Ducar, a member of the World Cup championship team, had been a student of mine when she was in high school. I followed her career from high school to the University of North Carolina and eventually onto the U.S. National Team. I experienced some of the ups and downs during her journey, but Tracy always impressed me by the fact that she had a plan, knew how to carry it out and would not let anything deter her from her dreams. One of my most painful decisions as a coach was when I had to replace Tracy as the reserve goalkeeper for the Olympic team in 1996. She had suffered an injury shortly before my decision had to be made and I felt that I owed it to the team to have a reserve goalkeeper who was 100 percent. Tracy was devastated, angry, and confused, but through her dedication and determination, she rebounded and made the 1999 World Cup Team. One of the primary reasons she was able to do this was because she had an intricate plan to help her reach her goal of recovering from her injury and again playing soccer on an elite level. Today Tracy is the goalkeeper for the Boston Breakers in the WUSA." - "Catch Them Being Good" by Tony DiCicco and Colleen Hacker
